Being Caribou

Filmmakers Leanne Allison and Karsten Heuer accompany a herd of caribous on their journey through the American wilderness. They have to cover a distance of 1500 kilometers on foot or ski over snowy mountains and icy creeks. Following the animals as fast as they can they find only a couple of hours to sleep in the night. It is hard for Leanne and Karsten to keep up with the herd. The banding together of the animals is the most stressful part of the adventure. The filmmakers have to eat and walk at the same time but they are not fast enough. In the end they decide to take a short cut over the mountains which is the only possibility to meet the animals again. Leanne and Karsten spent five month with the caribous documenting their experiences. "Being Caribou" - a documentary as touching as thought-provoking.

Deep Water Soloing

Deep Water Soloing - this is pure climbing. No rope, no bolts - there is nothing to keep you from the fall. Every move has to be well-considered. Resting too long on a tricky edge might take off the power you will need for the final pulls. But maybe the hardest part of this way of climbing is not ascending but descending. Ten or fifteen meters of free fall are waiting for the climbers when they have finished their line. Or less - if the fall earlier. But climbing pros like David Lama love Deep Water Soloing, because it is challenging, free and absolutely technical at the same time. The Mammut-Pro-Team (Cédric Lachat, Nina Caprez, Christina Schmid und Anthony Sapey) is visiting the island world in front of Thailand to solo the most amazing walls against an dreamlike backdrop.

Gasherbrum II

Sky Running is a very modern way of alpinism, outstanding in both flexibility and toughness:. Ascending fast and descending even faster. Benedik Böhm and Sebastian Haag are up to something completely new in the range of mountaineering: A sky run to the summit of Gasherbrum II (8053 m) and going the whole way down to Base Camp on ski - right through the death zone. In one day. The film does not only feature an outstanding sportive achievement, but also the whole strain of that tour including its preparations at Base Camp and mountain side.

Accompanied by comments of the legendary mountaineer and extreme skier Hans Kammerlander, the audience gains a unique insight in the ambience of the Karakorum and the exertions, the fears and the pleasures of the two young mountaineers.

Icetrek North Pole

"The arctic does not care for your well-being. It is waiting for you with three challenges instead: polar bears, thin ice and merciless coldness!"

Australian desert wanderer Jon Muir and polar expert Eric Philips decide to gain their own experience on their 1000 kilometer walk to the north pole: on foot or ski, with no food depots along the way. Most of the time they are walking on a thin and constantly cracking ice cover. The ground seems to be on the move all the time. And over all the bone-chilling cold - till 40 degress below zero - is their biggest enemy. Clothes, food and equipment - everything is frozen stiff. In the end of February both adventurers take of for their demanding journey. The Arctic Ocean is still frozen and only few sunbeams manage to break through the heavy clouds. Here is danger everywhere you look: massive fields of rough ice, tricky cracks and open water. Two months they're struggeling against the weather, technical difficulties and frostbites. It is a run against time. The last 35 kilometers are almost indomitable. In the end it takes Jon and Erice 58 days to reach their final destination: the north pole.
